| MATERIALS AND ADVANCE PREPARATION: 1 Preview the video segments from Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events 2 DVD player and television 3 Invite parents of youth and youth leaders to this session, but not youth themselves. 4 Paper and pencils 5 A list of the resources to hand out to participants SESSION OUTLINE FOCUS: Welcome parents and youth leaders, and explain that this session will be a time to make some observations about youth, the world they are growing up in, and how the adults in their lives are fitting into that world. Hand out paper and pencils. Ask participants to list the days of the week, and beside each day, to write down an estimate of how many minutes of “quality time” they spend that day interacting with a teenager. When everyone has completed their grid, share them with each other. Say: This exercise is not meant to create feelings of guilt, but to simply portray the reality we all live in. The reality is that in today’s North American culture, most adults are abandoning their youth. This abandonment is psychosocial. Youth have food, shelter, and all of the material things they need, but in general, they do not have the adults walking with them as they have in the past. Today we are going to watch some video clips from Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events to see how they might illustrate what our youth are experiencing. Continued... |
