WHO IS YOUR FRIEND—YOUR REAL FRIEND?
YOUTH GROUP LESSON 6
BY TAYLOR STUTZMAN

MATERIALS AND ADVANCE PREPARATION:

1 Preview the movie, Mean Girls, especially the clips used in this session.
2 DVD player and television
3 Several pictures of a teeter-totter.
4 Paper and pens
5 A list of the resources to hand out to participants

This session is designed to make students more conscious of the authenticity of their own individual friendships. It utilizes clips from the movie, Mean Girls, a story about a naive teen’s journey through high school. Cady arrives at high school for the first time in her life and is thrust into the battle for belonging. She meets two friends who convince her to pretend to befriend the group of popular girls known as “The Plastics” in order to spy on them. Soon enough Cady becomes engulfed in this game of deception and popularity and has to learn the hard way the importance of true friendship.
The first clip shows Cady meeting both sets of friends. It contrasts the shallowness of the “Plastics’” friendships versus the authenticity of Janice and Damien’s friendship (although as the movie in its entirety shows that there are times when Janice and Damien also use Cady).
In the second clip, the leader of the “Plastics” (Regina George) deliberately betrays Cady. She lies to the guy that Cady has a crush on to benefit her own personal status; once again proving that she cares more for herself than her so-called friend.
The last clip demonstrates Cady’s own betrayal of Janice and Damien when she gets too caught up in the popularity game. She finally begins to realize how much their friendship means to her when Janice confronts her.
