| MATERIALS AND ADVANCE PREPARATION: 1 The video or DVD of National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation and the equipment to show it. 2 Christmas snacks, such as decorated sugar cookies, candy, or anything else that looks “Christmassy.” 3 Art supplies to create postersmarkers, paper. Summary: National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation is about a man who wants his Christmas to be a perfect family picture with everyone getting together and getting along. Things go wrong from the beginning, and nothing he does turns out right. In the end, the family realizes that it wasn’t the big Christmas tree or the house decorated with millions of lights, but being together that made the Christmas holidays special.. FOCUS: Greet students and then pass around the snacks with these instructions: When students take a snack, they need to share what would make a perfect Christmas for them. After everyone has shared, continue the discussion: What would be a perfect Christmas? CONNECT WITH THE MOVIE: Show clip #1: “Finding the Perfect Tree” Chapter 3 [0:06:58-0:09:06] In this clip, the Griswold family walks all day through the cold and snow to find the perfect Christmas tree and chop it down for their living room. They walk and walk and finally find one that the father is pleased withthen they realize they forgot to bring a saw. Reflection: 1 In this clip, we see how one person was so set on having the perfect Christmas tree that he forgot about how important his family was to him. His intentions might have been good, but he went about it in the wrong way. How do we get caught up in the Christmas traditions and forget about what it really means? Continued... |
