YOUTH GROUP LESSON 15

| The President is the first to lay a card(s) and then Vice President follows, then citizen(s), then Vice Scum, Scum. The first person who lays a card can determine how many of each card is laid by the number of cards they lay. The next person has to lay the same number of cards (identical numbers) but higher than the cards on table. For example if the President lays two 3’s, the next person has to play two of any number higher than a 3, e.g. two 4’s. If only one card is played first, everyone else only needs to play one card. If they cannot play, or wish not to play then they can pass. The last person to play a card for that trick (a trick is all the cards laid during one turn) is then the first person to play a card for the next trick. So after the first hand, if everybody has lain, the Scum would lead. Play continues until all but one person is out of cards. Then the hierarchy for the next round is determined by the order in which the players go out. The first is President, Second Vice President, Second to last Vice Scum, and Last Scum. The Scum deals the cards out and also clears the playing area after each trick. Optional: To increase the desire to be President, create a reward for whoever is President for three times or so (i.e. candy, etc). When you feel like the game has gone on long enough, call the group together. REFLECT: Discuss: 1 How did it feel to be the Scum and Vice Scum? 2 This game was a fun way to illustrate social injustice. Social injustice is when we exploit others and gain from their losses. It might be because of their poverty, different race, different religion, etc. 3 Make a list with the group about the different social injustices that occur in our world today. For example: Wal-Mart and other companies exploiting cheap labor in foreign countries. Continued... |
