"WHAT'S THAT AGAIN, JESUS?" I by Carol Duerksen
YOUTH GROUP LESSON 17
After viewing the clips, divide youth into groups and ask each group to answer the following questions.
• Based on these video clips, what do you think is the theme of this retreat?
• Put yourself in these scenes. What are you doing? Are you watching the action? Participating? Which character could you be?
• Imagine Jesus walking into your group right now. What would he have to say about the clips you watched?
Ask groups to report in. Is there a consensus on the weekend theme? Share responses to the other questions as well.
Say: The early Christians used a term “The Kingdom of God.” Now, they didn’t mean some afterlife thing where everybody’s in heaven, sitting on clouds and playing harps. The Kingdom of God was something they were trying to bring about on earth, right then and there. So let’s say that’s still true — what does that mean? And is there something you or your church is doing to make that happen? If not, what would you like to see? What do you think the Kingdom of God on earth looks like? What defines it?
Ask each group to come up with a list of answers and to record them on the newsprint.
Share the answers with the whole group.
Hand out Bibles and ask students to turn to Luke 4:18-19. Read it together, then explain the next activity:
Based on the video clips, the Kingdom of God discussion, and this verse, I’d like for to you decide a theme for this retreat and a creative way to capture that theme. You can create a video, a poster, a rap song, a cheer—anything you want to do to tell the group. You may do this individually or in groups of 2-3. We will be voting on them and yes, there will be a prizes for the winners.
Give groups enough time to create their “theme projects” and then ask them to share and the group to vote on the top three. Give prizes!
Conclude this session by saying: So… you think you know our theme for this retreat. Come back to the next session to see what happens.
