YOUTH GROUP LESSON 18

| Present the story “Jesus Wasn’t Normal.” When you come to the Postscript, read the Bible passage before continuing on. After the story, ask students: In what ways was Jesus just not normal? (Answers may include his ability to perform miracles, the kinds of stories he told, his approach to ministry.) Divide students into groups to read and act out the following passages: Luke 7:36-50, Luke 10:25-37, Luke 14:1-24, Luke 15: 1-10, Luke 15:11-31, Luke 16:19-31 Tell students to read the passages and prepare a skit about the passage. After they have shared the skits, discuss with the group: How did these passages fit in with the theme you figured out for this retreat? Are there adjustments on the theme that you want to make? Invite youth to “stay tuned for further developments” in the next session. Jesus Wasn’t Normal by Leola Floren Gee Even on calm days, boats make me want to urp. They know their way around water, but they don’t know up from down on dry land. Sometimes I think about that as we’re hiking from one dusty village to another. I never bring it up to Jesus, though. His mind is on other things. Yesterday, he told more parables. Everyone seems to like the stories-well, everyone but the religious leaders who hover like horseflies-but I have the feeling there’s a point he’s making that I just don’t get: A farmer goes out to plant seeds, and as he scatters them, some fall beside the road and are trampled, or the birds swoop down and scoop them up.
