| CONNECT WITH THE MOVIES: Say: When Jesus was on earth, he often spoke in parables, or stories. The point of the story wasn’t always clear to the people who were listening to him. So, it is quite possible, that if Jesus was here today, he would be making movies because movies is one way that we tell stories in this day and age. Jesus was all about social justice when he was here, and he still is. He cares for people who experience prejudice, poverty, discrimination, and violence. He cares about people who are hurting for any reason, and he gets frustrated with people and social systems who cause that hurt. Today, you’ve brought some videos that show examples of social justice or injustice, so let‘s take a look at some of those segments and hear more about each movie. View the video clips and use the questions for discussion. If a student didn’t bring a video, ask him/her to share about a movie they’ve seen on this theme. APPLY: This activity can be done individually or in small groups, depending on how you think it will work best with your class. Ask students think about the social justice issue that concerns them the most. Then, ask them to come up with a movie storyline that would illustrate that issue. Who would they cast in the film? Where would it be shot? What would be the name of the movie? Share with the class. RESPOND: Ask each student to take a minute to think of one thing they can do right now to work on the social justice issue they named in the earlier activity. Share (allow persons to pass if they don’t want to share). If they are comfortable praying together, pair up and pray for each other to follow through. Continued... |
