| "CHURCH IS A DATING SERVICE" by Carol Duerksen | |||||||||||||

YOUTH GROUP LESSON 30
|

| Discuss: How do these statements connect with what the poster says? Give students time to struggle with that for a bit. Then continue with these words: Every church has its hang-ups and imperfections. But here are some questions to ask about a church: Is the story of Jesus being told? Is Jesus transforming lives? Can you see the difference? Is the truth-food of Jesus being offered to hungry souls? Is your church a dating service between the people and God? Discuss those questions as they relate to your congregation. Ask youth to list the areas in which they feel the church is a dating service between them and God, and those areas where it isn’t happening. APPLY Look back at the “dating lists” on the newsprint. Are there any ideas there that would work to help make the church a better dating service between people and God? For example, are we asking people to come? How about common interests? Can church be a place where people with common interests come together and learn about God? How about prom? What happens when you ask a date to prom? What is “prom” for the church? Brainstorm!!!! Let the ideas fly! List ways the church can “ask people in.” RESPOND Invite students, as individuals or as a class, to “ask people in.” Use the list they created and do it! Close with a prayer. STATEMENTS Jesus didn’t come as a theological policeman wielding a carefully worded doctrinal statement; Jesus came as a lover to woo his bride. Christianity isn’t about discovering the right answers but encountering the right person. Truth isn’t a dogma to be believed, but a person to be known. “I am the way, the truth and the life.” John 14:6 Truth has a belly button. The question at the heart of Christianity is not “Who do I want to be?” but “Whose do I want to becomemy own or his?” |
