| "WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO REALLY FOLLOW JESUS?" by Carol Duerksen | ||||||||||||

YOUTH GROUP LESSON 109

| Martin Luther interpreted the Sermon on the Mount by saying that Christians are citizens of both the world and the kingdom of Christ, and those entities have different rules. “Love your enemies” did not apply to the government. So, a Christian soldier could carry out orders to fight and kill even while following Christ’s law of love of enemies in his or her heart. The Anabaptists had a different approach. They believed that Jesus said what he meant and meant what he said. They didn’t fight. They died for their beliefs. They tried to love their enemies. But they also knew that they fell short of living up to all that Jesus called them to do. Our spiritual heritage is with the Anabaptists. We believe that Jesus wants us to follow him to the best of our ability, and to keep trying. That’s a radical lifestyle. Show students the cartoons included at the end of this lesson, then hand out the Bibles. Ask them to turn to the Sermon on the Mount in Matthew 5, 6, 7, and to skim through those chapters and choose themes to create their own cartoons of what it means to follow radically follow Jesus. Give students time to create their cartoons on their newsprint or easel paper. APPLY AND RESPOND: Look at all of the cartoons, one at a time. Discuss what it means to follow Jesus in each of those examples. Invite students to choose one cartoon or another verse in the Sermon on the Mount that they are willing to commit to working on in their life. If they want to have an accountability partner, help them with those pairings. Close with a prayer. Download this Session's Reproducible PDF - "Toons" |
